Quotes from Mana interviews - about Gothic Lolita & Moi-même-Moitié (translations mostly from mana-sama.net, I can’t remember my source for the first quote, sorry!)

***

My idea of Gothic Lolita, disregarding popular opinion, is that those who have a mysterious outlook on the world will eternally like it, and the scene is for these types of people. This is not only fashion, but all of the things they like (books and movies, for example,) all of it has a deep meaning.
When I was younger, I loved mysterious things, and I still love them. To be truthful I don’t believe I have changed at all since then. […] I don’t think I became Gothic Lolita, it was simply natural for me.

***

I’d say I draw my [fashion] influences from vampire movies, because I’m attracted to the aesthetics of Gothic romance, the beauty of the darkness of the night. […] I advocated the then-new style called Gothic Lolita, which combines cute with dark and mysterious, and wanted to make it a genre of fashion that permeated all corners of the world.

***

I currently create clothing that matches my view of the world for Moi dix Mois with Moi-même-Moitié.

***

To put it simply, [Visuals are] something you grasp on your own. Much like how you also grasp for the meaning of your own life.

***

Simply just beauty by itself is boring, so I think if you can make it mysterious, beauty becomes even more alluring, and for me, without playing into that type of view point it doesn’t feel right

***

‘Moi-même’ means ‘I myself’ and ‘Moitié’ means ‘half’, so put together it says ‘one half of myself’. At that time [when I thought of establishing a brand] I sometimes showed up as a woman and sometimes as a man, in other words, I have my ideal man and woman livinig within me, so that’s why I divided my brand into two lines. Or, because this woman and man share the same body at the same time, you say that’s another meaning of the brand’s name ‘one half of myself’ as well.

[…] Moi dix Mois reflects the worldview of Moi-même-Moitié. Moi dix Mois begins with letting the music and the incarnation of the world of Moi-même-Moitié unite. They both have ‘Moi’ in their name, which indicates the link between the two.

You may find full translations here. One of my favorite interviews is this one, I wanted to quote most of it but you should just read all of it :). a BIG THANK YOU to the translator (mana-sama.net admin) for her hard work!
